Italian Cooperation’s interventions have paid particular attention to environmental protection, which is considered a priority for promoting sustainable, enduring development in Albania.
The Guidelines of Italian Cooperation 2013-2015 restate this commitment and recognise the protection and preservation of the environment as a sectoral and cross-sectoral priority. In Albania, this strategic direction has been adopted by a number of interventions aimed at promoting environmentally sustainable development and enhancing Albania’s environmental heritage.
Italian Cooperation is funding a major initiative implemented through the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The "Programme of assistance to the Ministry of Environment for the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity", funded by Italy to the tune of 2.2 million, aims to strengthen the institutional structures of the Albanian Ministry of Environment dedicated to environmental protection and the conservation of biodiversity, with particular attention to the management of protected areas.
