After an initial phase of
contingent interventions worth over €30 million in response to social and
health emergencies, the major structural projects for local development have
been carried out as part of the World Bank’s Community Works Programme. The programmes funded in this area
generally provide for the construction or upgrading of the infrastructure of
essential services, in particularly disadvantaged rural areas or in the suburbs
of the country’s major cities.
The Programme of primary
infrastructure works in the district of Lapraka on the outskirts of Tirana is
currently in the completion phase. It provides interventions to renovate and
improve water and sewerage networks, electricity supply, and the maintenance of
road surfaces and green areas.
